Betting on Baseball

Betting on baseball can appear a little confusing to the newcomer, but remember, if it was really that difficult thousands upon thousands of bettors wouldn’t be doing it daily. Plus, baseball betting is just plan exciting!

Here’s the very basic lowdown to get you started:

The team expected to win is considered the Favorite, which leaves the other team as the Underdog.

Seems easy, right? Just put your money on the favorite then start counting your money! Well don’t start counting yet. Now this is where the odds come into play. To level the proverbial playing field, and to help them to make money, the odds makers will give us somethink like the following:

Cleveland -170, Seattle +150. (This is what is known as the Money Line.)

Here’s what the Money Line means… Cleveland is the favorite in this match-up, you can tell by the “minus sign”. So in this case you would put up $170 to win $100. (You don’t have to bet $100)

On the flip side, if you take the underdog, Seattle in this case, “+”, you put up 100 of your dollars to win $150.

Now that we’ve talked about the Money Line, let’s take a quick look at the Run Line. It’s very similar to the point spread system used in football, and that we’ll talk about on our separate football betting page.

What the odds makers will do is handicap the favorite team with a Run Line. For example, let’s take the favorite mentioned above, Cleveland. A Run Line would look some like this:

CLE -1.5 +120
SEA +1.5 -140

Now Cleveland is the underdog, (notice the +120), because they are “giving up” runs. This means if you bet $100 on Cleveland they will have to win by 1.5 runs, which is impossible since there’s no such thing as “half a run”, so they must win by two runs.

So for this example, you bet on Cleveland and the final was 5-4 in Cleveland’s favor, you would still lose the best since they did not win by two.

The winning bet would have been on Seattle, because they only lost the game by one run. You would have put up $140 dollars to win $100 in this case since they were the favored team, (-140).

Another popular option is betting the Over and Under line. Basically you’re betting on the final tally of the runs scored by each team. The over/under is usually listed under the standard Money Line. Let’s look at an example listing:

CLE +160
SEA -180
10 ov-105

The top two lines you’re familiar with, that’s the money line, but see the “10 ov -105″, that’s the over/under this particular game. If the total runs by both teams is below 10, the “under”wins, but if it’s over 10, the “over” wins. But if the total is 10, the total bet pushes.
